The Smart Growth Partnership of Southeast Florida (SGP) has awarded the 2017 SMART GROWTH EXCELLENCE AWARD to the Village of Palmetto Bay (the Village) and Bermello Ajamil & Partners (B&A) for the Village’s Downtown Master Plan and Downtown Urban Village Regulations.  The SGP seeks to recognize projects and communities that have used approaches that involve a broad variety of stakeholders, are innovative, and could be replicated elsewhere.  The award will be presented at the SGP’s September 14th annual event: Using Smart Growth Principles to Transform and Connect our Communities-Learning from the Past for a Sustainable Future.

The Village of Palmetto Bay Downtown Urban Village Regulations (DUV) are the form-based regulations adopted, as the implementation vehicle, to realize the vision established with the community for a mixed-use downtown at the heart of the Village of Palmetto Bay. These development standards support a land-use policy that employs smart urban design principles, encourages public/private partnerships and the tools to incentivize development.

In the short period of time following adoption of the DUV, developer interest has exceeded expectations, with numerous site plans approved under the new code and more on the drawing board, putting the Village of Palmetto Bay Downtown well on its way to fruition.

“Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc. is honored to accept this year’s 2017 Smart Growth Excellence Award alongside the Village of Palmetto Bay, for the Village of Palmetto Bay Downtown Master Plan and Downtown Urban Village Regulations,” stated Alfredo Sanchez, Partner at Bermello, Ajamil & Partners.  “With rarely available, vacant, urban land adjacent to a transit-way and public champions leading this engaged community to establish a unified vision for the future, the Village of Palmetto Bay Downtown Master Plan exemplifies each of the Smart Growth Principles fundamental to improve communities environmentally, socially and economically.”

Honorable mention goes to the Tri-Rail’s Pompano Beach Station and Operations Center and BrowardNEXT.
