Manhattan’s Pier 90 Cruise Terminal Open for Business Following Major Renovation
Pier 90, one of New York City’s vital cruise terminals reopened for business in September after a yearlong construction period. The terminal redesign is the last of four terminals that formed part of a larger master plan developed by Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc. (B&A), one of the leading waterfront design firms in the world.
“B&A’s Maritime expertise was instrumental to undertake the major upgrades and enhancements of the cruise terminals in Manhattan and Brooklyn” said Dmitri Konon, Vice President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYC-EDC).
“The redevelopment of the New York waterfront forms the cornerstone of the NYC-EDC’s vision to promote cruising into the Boroughs and accommodate the larger fleets of mega cruise vessels currently under production. We are pleased to help make this vision a reality” said Rai Fernandez, Architect, Director and Partner for B&A.
The upgrades at Pier 90 included the renovation of the building’s exterior, major interior upgrades including passenger waiting areas, furnishings, finishes, lighting, escalators and check-in counters. The new master plan also included the addition of a new ground transportation area, improved mechanical plant, installation of modern security systems, customs and border protection station and upgraded life safety and building egress.
In addition to B&A’s design, the firm was also retained by the NYC-EDC as general consultants in negotiating long-term cruise contracts with several major cruise lines.
September 2008 - Inauguration of the New Passenger Port of St. Petersburg
Phase I of the New Cruise Passenger Port of St. Petersburg, Russia master planned by Bermello Ajamil & Partners will be inaugurated next Wednesday the 10th of September.
This portion of the project will support service for 2 mega cruise vessels to the area.
Phase II Work Continues
Work continues on phase II of the massive 25-hectare cruise passenger port which will be fully operational in its entirety by May 2010 supporting a total of 7 cruise vessels simultaneously. The port will also serve as the hub for a larger land reclamation project of more than 450 hectares supporting expansion of the City of St. Petersburg over the next 20 years.
B&A is excited to be involved in this project which will breathe new life to the City of St. Petersburg’s waterfront, allowing for its continued leadership and growth of the region’s cruise tourism efforts.
